Message from the Director

Dr. Joan M. ColferWelcome to our first edition of the Collier County Health Department Health Connection e-newsletter.  Because of your previous support of public health and the Collier County Health  Department, I wanted you to be the first to receive our inaugural e-newsletter.  In an effort to keep our partners and members of the community informed about emerging public health issues, I will plan to use this communication tool  periodically, but also sparingly so as not to overload your email box.

One topic that I am passionate about is the obesity epidemic.  With almost 30% of our children and nearly two-thirds of our adults overweight or obese in Collier County, we are committed to reducing this burden.  The Collier County Health Department  and the Safe and Healthy Children's Coalition have teamed up to promote "9-5-2-1-0,  Let's Go!".  The numbers represent healthy goals for you and your family to strive towards each day.  Please join me in this wellness challenge today!

Note, in addition to the news below, you can access our Collier County Health Department website anytime.  On our website you will see the wide variety of  services we offer and additional informational about current health topics in Collier County. If you find this e-newsletter worthwhile, I hope you will share it with family, friends, co-workers and others.  Thank you for your consistent support and partnership in striving to keep Collier healthy.

Yours in Health,

How to be Safe at the Fair

Pig at the fairAnimals, just like humans, carry germs that can make people sick. While it is not common, flu viruses can spread from pigs to people, and vice versa.  One change in the flu virus that has been found in the U.S. and is spread more easily is called "H3N2".  The main risk factor is through exposure, especially close contact, to animals.  For more information about the Collier County Fair visit www.colliercountyfair.com.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Collier County Health Department recommend taking action to protect against infection and to prevent the spread of H3N2v:

  1. Wash your hands before and after entering the petting zoo.
  2. Avoid "hand to mouth" contact. Never eat, drink, or smoke in the animal area.
  3. Use special caution entering the area if you are pregnant, elderly, or are with children under 5.
  4. Leave strollers, toys, pacifiers, cups, baby bottles, or similar items outside the petting zoo.

Collier County Farmers Market

Farmers Market ProduceIn April 2011, the Collier County Health Department and Smart Growth Coalition collaborated with Florida Gulf Coast University students to create a year-round Farmer's Market at the Government Complex.  The concept of the market is to bring healthy food access to over 2,000 employees, in addition to visitors and local residents.  "I enjoy getting my fruits and vegetables at the Farmer's Market and have found myself eating much healthier.  I also look forward to the great tasting healthy lunches," said one satisfied customer.  The Farmers grab lunch and pick up your produce at the Collier County Farmer's Market. Farmers Market Vendors

The Farmer's Market is every Friday, year-round, from 11am to 2pm at the Collier County Government Complex.  Anyone is welcome to attend!
